Let's just call out the elephant in the room: The most intriguing item on this year's Honda Odyssey is its built-in vacuum. Exclusive on the 2014 Odyssey's Touring Elite trim, HondaVac, the world's first in-car vacuum is just one part of the Odyssey's refresh. Other items on this year's menu include sleek new styling, safety upgrades and added family-friendly technologies. Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations at American Honda, notes: "The Odyssey is already the leader in its segment, and for 2014, Honda has made the modern family hauler even better." Accavitti adds, "Honda is once again showcasing its reputation for innovation with HondaVac, and its ability to provide true value to our customers." Developed in conjunction with Shop-Vac, the all-new HondaVac consists of a powerful vacuum, replaceable filter, canister bag and nozzle accessories, all neatly integrated into a dedicated space of the rear cargo area. This system's integrated hose and cleaning attachments are designed to reach into every corner of the Odyssey's cabin. Plus, the vacuum's powerful electric motor never needs an outlet or recharging and can operate continuously with the engine running. The HondaVac will continue to operate for up to eight minutes, even after the vehicle is turned off.
The Odyssey's 3.5-liter V-6, producing 248 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, carries over from last season. This is the only engine available on the 2013 Odyssey and is equipped with variable cylinder management, which saves fuel by using only three or four cylinders in low-demand situations. A six-speed automatic transmission replaces the five speed unit on the Touring and Touring Elite models. The Odyssey's LX, EX and EX-L trims come with the five-speed automatic. All trim levels come with active noise cancellation as standard equipment.
Safety upgrades on Honda's 2014 minivan include structural upgrades to the body. The Japanese automaker hopes this will satisfy the IIHS's new small-overlap frontal crash test. The top-of-the-line Touring Elite trim also receives as standard the manufacturer's expanded-view driver's mirror, and forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems. Standard safety equipment includes vehicle stability and traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist, three-row side-curtain airbags with rollover sensor, driver and front passenger side airbags, and dual-stage, multi-threshold front airbags.
New styling mods on the 2014 Odyssey include a more sophisticated exterior, a deeply sculpted aluminum hood and fresh aluminum front fenders. Other tweaks show up as a more aggressive grille, plus a revised lower front fascia with integrated chrome-trimmed foglights, and LED taillight bars for the rear. Inside, Honda embellishes with new finishes and an all-new center stack. Tech devices that would make Bill Gates smile consist of a keyless smart entry with push-button start, HD radio, an SMS text messaging function, plus HondaLink with an Aha mobile interface. The free HondaLink smartphone app utilizes the owner's favorite online content to create live, personalized radio stations. This setup lets drivers follow updates and newsfeeds from Facebook and Twitter (oh, what on Earth would we do without FB and Twitter updates). With this system, those behind the wheel can also check out restaurant reviews and find the closest coffee shop--all without touching a button!
